ISS-Short Profile

The Institute for Social Work and Social Education (ISS-Frankfurt a. M.) was founded in 1974 by the Federal Workers’ Welfare Association (Arbeiterwohlfahrt, AWO). Since 1991 it has been a legally independent non-profit organisation with its headquarters in Frankfurt am Main. The ISS-Frankfurt a. M. has additional office in Berlin.
The ISS-Frankfurt a. M. monitors and analyses developments in social work. Its employers include governmental departments, municipalities, charitable organisations, and social service providers. The institute is supported by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ). Since 1998, Hans-Georg Weigel has been the director of the Institute.

  • The ISS-Frankfurt a. M. provides scientifically based research in the field of social work. The Institute acts as an interface between policy, academic research and practice. It ensures a smooth interaction between research and practice by offering practical advice and support.
  • The range of duties includes scientifically based services and consultations for the European Union as well as for federal, state and local governments, and the transfer of findings into the scientific community and the practice of social work.
  • The working structure is characterised by experienced scientists, often with double qualifications, who work on a broad spectrum of topics as part of interdisciplinary teams. Thus, the Institute is able to flexibly respond to changes in society and social work and to the hence resulting action requirements for service providers, administration and politics.
  • On the ISS-website you will find, e.g., work reports and expert opinions for download as well as brief descriptions of every project. Please refer to the ISS-website (www.iss-ffm.de) for further information about the institute and its co-operations.
